Applications of Beta-Glucanase
Beta-glucanase plays a crucial role in various biotechnological fields, including the production of bioethanol as an alternative to fossil fuels. It is also used as an animal feed additive to improve growth and performance.
Grain-based diets, particularly those containing barley, can significantly increase the viscosity of digested feed in monogastric animals (such as poultry), negatively affecting nutrient absorption.
As beta-glucan is a key component of fungal cell walls, this enzyme also has strong antifungal properties. Beta-1,3-glucanase, when combined with chitinase, exhibits potent antifungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi like Botrytis cinerea, which affects greenhouse crops. Since this enzyme is non-toxic to animal cells, it can also be used as an antifungal treatment for infections such as Candida albicans.
